In conjunction with Shoulder to Shoulder, an internationally
recognized nonprofit, Fairfax Family Practice provides medical
education and service to rural Pinares, Honduras. Pinares is
remote, and 40% of the population lives on less than the equivalent
of $2 per day. Children lack access to basic medical and dental
care. Working with the community, Shoulder to Shoulder has
established a year-round clinic staffed by a nurse on a daily basis. A Honduran doctor and dentist visit weekly.
Brigades of nurses, physicians, interpreters, medical students and
dentists from Fairfax Family Practice, Shoulder to Shoulder,
Virginia Commonwealth University and others visit on a regular
basis and provide direct medical care and education in partnership
with the permanent staff. Volunteers hike into surrounding villages
to provide access to those unable to reach the clinic. Ongoing
projects include water filtration, a child health initiative,
cervical cancer screening, and merit-based scholarships to local
children.
Donations go directly to support education, scholarships and service
and are not used to pay for travel costs.
