VCU-Fairfax Family Medicine provides unique family medicine specialty training in the sophisticated and culturally diverse Northern Virginia Area. Established in 1971, Fairfax Family Practice launched its residency program in 1972, becoming one of the premier family medicine residency programs using a longitudinal curriculum. VCU-Fairfax Family Medicine is the result of collaboration between the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Family Medicine, INOVA Health System, and Fairfax Family Practice Center, a privately owned group practice. With emphasis on adult learning and a tradition of innovation and caring for community, our physicians have incorporated the use of a comprehensive electronic medical records system; (EMR). This addition allows our residents to stay at the forefront of medical technology, in our clinical practice. VCU-Fairfax Family Practice is an idea atmosphere for physicians training to practice in a clinical environment while evolving in the ever changing medical world.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              VCU-Fairfax Family Medicine Residency' has delveloped a Global Health & Community Medicine Program. The program's mission is to improve our resident's knowledge, skill, and attitude as it relates to international medicine, and providing care for patients from undeserved populations.  As such, program provides a basic curriculum to all residents while allowing interested, self-selected residents to work with a faculty preceptor to design a more in-depth and specialized program, including intensive international immersion experiences (primarily in Honduras) as well as longitudinal experiences in a variety of local settings (free clinics, community agencies, advocacy organizations, etc.).  Areas of emphasis in this program include:  basics of community and public health, cultural competence and cultural humility, and international medicine and travel health.
